FAQ
What is the Global Citizenship Alliance (GCA)?
The GCA has emerged as a leader in global citizenship education, preparing diverse students for work, life, and citizenship in a rapidly globalizing and interdependent world. The GCA also partners with institutions to integrate global citizenship learning into curricula and strategic plans to enhance the global engagement of campuses and to prepare ever-larger number of students for engaged democratic citizenship and global social responsibility.
What is a Global Citizenship Seminar (GC Seminar)?
A GC Seminar is a short-term program offered by the Global Citizenship Alliance for students as well as for faculty and administrators of colleges and universities. It is designed to provide an intensive seven-day, residential international experience for participants to explore pressing issues of global concern and to view such issues from a perspective both literally and figuratively outside the borders of the United States.
Why are we offering Global Citizenship Seminars?
Recent studies by ACE, NAFSA, the World Economic Forum, and others highlight a significant gap in international skills, knowledge, and experience among U.S. college students. They call for a major expansion of study abroad opportunities to make undergraduate education more global in scope. The Global Citizenship Seminars address this need by offering U.S. colleges a short-term, affordable, and intensive international experience that helps students and faculty build essential global competencies. To further advance this mission, the Global Citizenship Alliance has also begun recruiting participants internationally.
What are the goals of a GCS?
To expose participants, students and faculty alike, to important global issues and to provide them with critical tools for understanding new developments in world affairs.
What are the outcomes of a GCS?
A Global Citizenship Seminar helps students and faculty develop greater awareness of global issues and what it means to be a “global citizen.” Participants become more discerning in evaluating information about world affairs and gain a deeper understanding of both America’s role in the world and how the U.S. is perceived abroad. They return to their campuses with this enriched perspective—students bringing it into classroom discussions and campus life, and faculty weaving new ideas and sources into their syllabi and course materials.
Is there only one version of the program?
No, there are two GC Seminar versions: one for Students, and one for Faculty Administrators. While both programs will cover similar themes (world affairs, global citizenship, viewing events from a non-American perspective, etc.), the Faculty and Administrator program will also provide pedagogical techniques for making one’s teaching more international, applying such techniques in the classroom, and encouraging an institutional commitment to global issues.
Where does a GCS take place?
What are the costs?
As of 2026, the cost of participation is US$2,450 per person for Student Seminars and US$2,450 per faculty advisor accompanying a student group. For Faculty & Administrators Seminars, the fee is US$3,250 per person. These costs include all program fees as well as full room and board. Due to the US Dollar decline, an additional charge of 10% may be applied for Dollar-Euro exchange rate fluctuations.
Can students receive credit for participating in a GC Semimar?
Currently, the decision whether or not to grant credit for a GCS is made individually by each participating college, often in consultation with the GCA. Contact your study abroad office for information. The GCA, however, is actively seeking ways to grant credit for the GC Seminar.
How does one apply to a GC Seminar?
Application to a GC Seminar is through your college and not via the Global Citizenship Alliance. Applications, admissions, financial aid, and petition for credit are all handled by participating colleges and universities; contact your campus study abroad office for details. Colleges and universities wishing to participate in a GC Seminar should contact Dr. Reza Fakhari, President of the GCA at rfakhari@globalcitizenshipalliance.org. For 2026, GCA will be accepting individual applicants for Student and for Faculty & Administrator sessions. Please contact Dr. Fakhari for information on how to apply.
Who is the main contact person for partner institutions at the Global Citizenship Alliance?
Dr. Reza Fakhari, President & CEO, rfakhari@globalcitizenshipalliance.org.
